The internal change a character undergoes across a story - from who they are to who they become.
A character arc is the through-line of inner change: the protagonist starts believing one thing about themselves or the world, gets tested until that belief breaks, and ends somewhere new. The classic shape tracks the gap between what a character wants and what they need to face.
Arcs come in flavours - a positive change arc toward growth, a flat arc where a steadfast character changes everyone around them, a negative arc into corruption or ruin. The plot is the pressure that forces the arc; when readers say a story felt hollow, a missing or unearned arc is the usual cause.
