Any medium · 12 beats
Best for: adventure, fantasy, sci-fi, and myth. Christopher Vogler's 12-stage adaptation of Joseph Campbell's monomyth. Star Wars, The Matrix, and Lord of the Rings all walk this path.
Percentages show roughly where each beat lands in the finished story — the midpoint of a 110-page screenplay is page 55.
Establish the hero in their everyday context. Show what they have, what they lack, and the tension that defines the world they're about to leave.
An invitation, threat, or disruption that disturbs the ordinary world and presents the hero with a quest, problem, or opportunity.
The hero hesitates. Doubt, fear, obligations, or risk make them resist the adventure. This makes their eventual commitment cost something.
The hero encounters someone (or something) that offers wisdom, training, or a tool needed for the journey. The mentor doesn't have to be a person; a memory, an inheritance, or a book can mentor.
The hero commits and steps into the special world. The rules change. There is no easy way back.
The hero learns the rules of the new world through escalating challenges. They make friends, identify antagonists, and discover their own untested capabilities.
Final preparation before the central ordeal. Plans are laid, doubts surface, the stakes are named. The hero is approaching the most dangerous part of the journey.
The hero faces a death or near-death experience, literal or symbolic. They confront their greatest fear. Something must die for the new self to be born.
Having survived the ordeal, the hero takes possession of what they came for: an object, knowledge, a person, or self-understanding. The victory feels real but is not yet earned.
The hero recommits to completing the journey. New threats emerge as they try to return to the ordinary world with the reward. The antagonist often regroups here.
The final test. The hero confronts the antagonist or their inner demon one last time and is transformed. This is the moment the new self is proven.
The hero returns to the ordinary world bearing something of value: wisdom, freedom, healing, a relationship. The world is changed because the hero changed.
